The new release, version 7.0.517.41, includes hundreds of bug fixes, an updated HTML5 parser, a new file API, and directory uploading via input tags.

The new release fixes failures on auto-complete, shift reload which ignores any cached copy when reloading, and a bug which caused the default search provider to disappear.

Three of the security issues are rated as of high importance, one as medium, and one as low.

The update is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame and will be pushed out to users automatically over the coming days.

The new update schedule cuts the previous release schedule in half, allowing users to get finished features sooner.

“We have new features coming out all the time and do not want users to have to wait months before they can use them” wrote Chrome Project Manager Anthony Laforge.

This also doesn’t mean the end of stability. “While pace is important to us, we are all committed to maintaining high quality releases — if a feature is not ready, it will not ship in a stable release” continued Laforge.

Laforge also notes that while version numbers will begin to increase at a faster pace, differentiation between versions will not be as drastic as have been in the past.

End users may not notice the difference however, with updates being pushed out silently.

The Google Chrome team are in the process of implementing some changes to the user interface, in the aim of streamlining the toolbar.

Changes include displaying either a magnifying glass, or a globe icon in the URL bar to help determine what the browser is doing with the user input. Secure sites will now display the padlock icon at the start of the URL, rather than at the end of the URL bar.

These changes are starting to make their way into Chrome Dev Builds.

Google have today announced the launched a new website, called HTML5 Rocks, showcasing the power of HTML5 and related technologies.

The site currently includes nine tutorials demonstrating how to utilise some of HTML5′s new features, along with an in-depth HTML5 powered presentation on the new language.

“Because HTML5 and its related technologies cover so much ground, it can be a real a challenge to get up to speed on them. That’s why today we’re sharing HTML5 Rocks, a great new resource for developers and teams looking to put HTML5 to use today, including more information on specific features and when to use them in your apps” wrote Paul Irish, Google Chrome Developer Relations.

I encourage developers to dive in and check it out. An all HTML5 web is sure to see some interesting sites and applications.

The comes on the back of an integrated Flash player, which has seen improved performance and stability within the browser.

“Millions of web users rely on PDF files every day to consume a wide variety of text and media content. The traditional browser plug-in model, though powerful, presents challenges in compatibility, performance, and security. To overcome this, we’ve been working with the web community to help define a next generation browser plug-in API” wrote Marc Pawliger, Chrome Engineering Director.

Chrome Dev Channel release 6.0.437.3 now includes built in PDF support. Users can get this version by following the instructions on the Chromium website.
